CSD 18, de laatste dag , vrijdag 14 mei 2010

Vandaag is de laatste dag van CSD 18. Vanmiddag komt de samenvatting van de voorzitter.

Gerda Verburg heeft afgelopen woensdag een toespraak gehouden in de grote zaal van de VN. Aardig om daar te zitten, een zaal die ik alleen van de TV ken.
Zij heeft aangekondigd dat in de eerste week van november 2010 een (global) conferentie zal plaatsvinden in Den Haag over landbouw, voedselzekerheid en klimaat. Nederland organiseert de conferentie in samenwerking met Ethiopie, Noorwegen, Nieuw-Zeeland, de Wereldbank en FAO. Verder heeft zij een voorstel gedaan om een taskforce in te stellen om de resultaten van CSD 17 om te zetten in concrete acties. Inmiddels is dit voorstel met een aantal delegaties besproken en een aantal ontwikkelingslanden hebben al aangegeven dat dit een goed plan is . Het is mij overigens niet duidelijk wanneer (en sowieso of en waar ) hierover wordt besloten.

De Women Mayor Group heeft zich deze twee weken goed geweerd, met praktisch elke dag een statement.
Onderstaande statement is vanochtend uitgesproken door Ineke Gijsberts, een van de ' leading ladies' van de Women Mayor Group, mede namens (en dus ook gezamenlijk voorbereid) namens de NGO's :

" Way forward – Women and NGO MGs - 14 May 2010

Thank you, Chair.

We call for integrative solutions at all levels: local, national and global on all the themes of CSD-18 to ensure that all life and human rights, and especially the rights of women, children and young people and indigenous peoples, are protected.

We call for actions that would ensure that best practices and lessons learned are shared worldwide. These would cover the following challenges to be implemented by 2020.

· Ways of restoring the earth to its natural health by stopping environmental degradation and contamination of natural resources.
· Freeing the environment of waste and toxic chemicals, including asbestos.
· Moving to a values-based economy that promotes zero-waste and is tied to sustainability indicators.
· A discussion before the next IPM on the 10-year Framework of Programmes that is open, all-inclusive, structured and formalized.

Article 26 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights must be implemented and include education on sustainable consumption and production patterns.

Producers must be held accountable for the life cycle of their products and the degradation of natural resources. We call for a legal and financing mechanism, such as an International Court for the Environment, that would use these funds both for environmental restoration and a basic livelihood for all. In this way, each person can develop their unique potential and contribute to the wellbeing of all.

We ask governments to be inspired by visionary proposals from all sources, including civil society, to bring new thinking to CSD-19.

First of all, I want to thank the chair for the full participation of the women major group in this CSD.

My name is Comfort, I am from Ghana. I am a teacher by profession. Women shape de future by preparing our children to become adults who take responsibility for our planet and our livelihoods, and whose values reflect equality respect, and honour.

I now work for an NGO, Voices of African Mothers, where we improve women’s lot. We know that when we improve women’s livelihoods, they improve their families and communities livelihoods.

Without women, we cannot achieve Sustainable Development, without Women, we cannot achieve any of the Millennium Development Goals.

When women move, the world moves. "

De laatste uitspraak vind ik echt prachtig en sterk.

Er is deze twee weken veel vergaderd en gedebatteerd; elke dag heeft de Women Mayor Group afgesproken wie een statement wil voorbereiden en in de plenaire bijeenkomst wil uitspreken. Het mooie is dat het geen moeite heeft gekost om daar vrijwilligsters voor te vinden.
Ik heb zelf gisteren een statement voorbereid en uitgesproken over vrouwen en sustainable transport. Samen met Lesha ingekort tot een max. 2 minuten spreektijd (meer krijg je niet; als je over je tijd heengaat begint de voorzitter driftig met zijn of haar hamer te kloppen).

Statement on Transport-Mayor Womens Group

Thank you chair

Women Major Group would like to mention 4 points with respect to the position of women and sustainable transport policies:
In rural areas, the lack of connecting means of transport affects especially women and girls, causing serious health problems. For example: a bus stop, miles away from the only hospital in the neighborhood, forcing pregnant women to walk extra miles. Government and private sector should use better planning incorporating these needs of women and their communities.

The increase of women participation in the market place, leads to higher mobility and use of public transport by women. Transport policy has to be reviewed and lead to safe, public transport. There are some good gender sensitive examples available, e.g. in Japan. These examples must be imbedded in government policies. The CSD has a task in proposing actions and disseminate information in this respect.

Key words for sustainable transport are innovation and technology. Partnerships should be formed and include industry, government, institutes for science and technology and civil society organizations. The challenge is to bring good ideas from the design table via pilots and demo’s to the market. Creating volume for new solutions is the biggest challenge. Good examples: promotion of inter-modal transport, river transport as mentioned by France and use of alternative fuels like LNG for inland navigation as being developed in the Netherlands.

Partnership have to include women and their interests from the start on an equal footing. Their participation is instrumental for reaching the above goals.
In the Maritime industry, women have organized themselves in WISTA, a worldwide network. Involvement of these women and their outlook will certainly enhance the quality of the solutions. They call for more involvement of more women and recognition of their contributions to the maritime industry.

De belangrijkste inhoudelijke punten van de Women Mayor Group waren deze twee weken gericht op :
- sustainable consumption and production: vrouwen als drijvende kracht, agents of change in de rol van moeder, opvoeder, goede voorbeeld;
- waste en mining: vooral focus op electronisch afval (producers moeten verantwoordelijk worden gesteld) en uraniummijnen en goudmijnen (stoppen met nieuwe concessies, opruimen troep na sluiting mijnen, respecteren ILO wetgeving)
- transport: in rurale gebieden betere planning door overheid en private sector (verbeteren toegang tot transport, verbeteren van mogelijkheden van transport), verder bevorderen van veilig openbaar vervoer voor vrouwen.

Ik heb alleen een paar highlights hier genoemd en dit lijstje is zeker niet uitputtend.
